Title: Folding of a Fitted Sheet
Client: Prospective hotel housekeeping client
Made with: Mac Pages
Time in Development: 12 hours
Collaborators: Solo-Project
Background
Many people in the hotel industry struggle with storing their extra fitted sheets. The geometry of the folds can be difficult to wrap your head around when you have several dozen sheets to do.
Solution Developed
The product is an image only set of eleven instructions for how to fold a fitted sheet in poster format. The poster is designed to be printed at 11×17 paper size so it can be used as a quick look reference. The blue glove is used to point to critical parts of each step. The criteria of this project is to create a series of step by step instructions to complete a task. The colors of the poster are designed to be high contrast to each other and fit within a variety of hotel color pallets.
An area of struggle was fine tuning the steps of the process. At one point there were 21 steps in the rough draft at were then cut to 18 for the story boarding process. Of these 18 only 11 were found to be visually impactful to the learner being able to understand the steps of the process. During the photography process the sheet being folded was patterned in such a way that the colors complimented the background but were distinct in style. After reviewing the pictures it was apparent that the solid color sheet looked better and was better at relaying the information.
Results
During the course of this project I found that I enjoy story boarding and analyzing a movement into its individual steps. I think that by breaking down movement steps into small chunks I was able to prioritize the steps that the employees of the hotel will see as the most important in completing the folding of a fitted sheet. Step 11 of the poster shows a successfully folded fitted sheet. During the photography session I did not use an iron or steamer because I wanted it to be authentic to the energy in the housekeeping department that is looking of the sheets to be returned to the rooms or stored. It is possible to pull wrinkles from the sheet after it exits dryer.
